All About Dr Seuss Artwork

By Celia Hall

Many children can remember being introduced to reading through Dr Seuss classics. The easy to read pattern and whimsical characteristics made his work unforgettable. The real artist behind these masterpieces was a man named Theodor Seuss Geisel. He was a cartoonist and illustrator that later dedicated his career to creating children's books. What many people don't know is that Geisel had a large collection of Dr Seuss artwork he had created.

Illustration art is probably the most popular and recognizable of all of Geisel's artwork. Besides in the storybooks, these illustrations can be seen in limited edition reproductions. These pieces are created using lithography and typically take approximately three months to create. This hand-pulled method creates a final product of the highest quality. These prints can be purchased through authorized dealers only.

Geisel also created secret works of art in the form of paintings and drawings. These images were not as child like as his most famous illustrations, although they did feature creatures that resemble the iconic ones in the books. These works were done in a more mature manner, using more muted colors and dark depictions. Geisel worked on these images strictly out of pleasure and told his wife to not release them until his death.

These masterpieces are reproduced using a complicated process called serigraphy. The process has to be done by master printmakers, who break down the original image by colors. The end result is a piece of art that is almost identical to the original in appearance and quality. All of these works can be easily seen in a book titled The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss by Random House of New York, as well as purchased by authorized dealers.

Geisel did not only produce two dimensional art, but also created many pieces of three dimensional pieces. He created what was called unorthodox taxidermy by sculpting his famous animal creations out of bronze and then mounting them on wood. They resembled traditional taxidermy, but in true Geisel fashion, it had a whimsical look to it. He was very detailed in their creation, even using real animal parts, such as beaks and horns, in the sculptures.

A great place to see tribute to this wonderful artist is the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden located in Massachusetts. Geisel's stepdaughter, Lark Grey Dimond-Cates, created large sculptures in the image of some of Geisel's most beloved characters. These large sculptures are made of bronze and often depict famous storyline scenes.

It is no surprise that the work of Geisel earned him many awards. He was awarded seven doctorate awards in his lifetime, many in some form of art or literature. Many of his stories were turned into cartoons and movies, earning him one Oscar and two Emmy awards. However, one of the most respectable awards he won was the Laura Ingalls Wilder award for this lifetime contribution to children's literature.

Dr Seuss artwork created the magic that made reading the books so fun for children. The stories were interesting and gave confidence in reading, but the art is what children often remember. Geisel has made a huge impact on the literacy of children and their introduction to reading.
