Helping Children Realize Alternatives Through The Power Of Art

By Natasha Moore

Community activists have long searched for ways to instill self esteem and self worth into children living in impoverished conditions. The hope is that they will find the courage and strength to raise themselves out of their hardships and lead productive and fulfilling lives. The odds against the activists being successful can be overwhelming at times, but still they fight to rescue as many of the youth as they can. One way that is gaining attention is using the power of art to help foster children escape their pain and see the value in living a good life.

These programs generally focus on young people between the age of twelve and eighteen. They are considered as at risk youth because they usually come from broken homes that offer little love and guidance. Many of these youngsters turn to the streets to find acceptance. Many of them will engage in behavior that might have a damaging affect on their lives.

These children can be located at a few places that average teens never see. The juvenile court system is filled with people having trouble dealing with their lives. Some of them have been placed in foster homes instead of with their real families. There are alternative schools where these teens will be assigned because they do not get along well with others in regular schools.

Some activists believe that if these children are given alternatives to their destructive behavior they might be able to recognize that they can make good decisions. The activists want the teens to be able to let people know and feel their anger without actually being angry.

When one produces art they are often revealing a glimpse into their soul. This form of expression lets others think about the road one has gone down and what they have experienced. This allows one to release the emotions that have built up inside them. When the emotions are released they might not control the behaviors that have lead to trouble.

A child can use many different forms of expression to express themselves. They can write and produce a short play. Some children will pick up a brush and paint a scene that reflects their life. What is important is that the youths be able to be in charge of what they want to express. They should not be made to feel like they are not an active participant in the process.

One should use professionals that can teach them how things are done in order for them to build their skills. A teacher who can relate to the struggles and feelings can be a tremendous asset to connecting with the troubled teens in a way other may not be able to. This attachment might help to ensure that the children keep on coming back and develop a positive attitude about what is happening.

Teens who have not been treating well at home can have many problems. They are often psychological and emotionally scarred as a result of mistreatment by those who should be providing them love and attention. Some professionals feel that getting them involved in the power of art program can be a good way for them to see themselves in a different way that leads to positive changes in their lives.
