How Post Civil War Gowns Differ From The Previous Fashion Sense

By Celia Hall

Women have always loved fashion, right from the early times. This is why most of them would rather go hungry rather than miss the latest fashion. The fashion industry is therefore very dynamic and competent when compared to others in the global market. With each passing season, something new comes up. Right from the high end designers to the local tailors, they all use their creativity and imagination to create unique designs. Sometimes, the current designs are just a recreation of past frocks and gowns. How then do the post civil war gowns differ from the past?

Today, there is a slight difference in how the rich and the average people dress, but this is not as distinct as it was the case in those days. Currently, people would purchase second hand clothes or shoes and look as stylish as the individual who went to a boutique. In the past however, the difference between the rich the poor in terms of dressing was obvious. For instance, the average woman had a couple of day dress, and at least two used on special occasions and days. A dress worn to church would not be worn on any other normal day.

Unlike the common woman who had to contend with few dresses, the rich women on the other hand were well endowed. Most of them had many dresses, of different designs. Special and formal events like balls were graced with unique gowns made in expensive materials like silk. They also wore corsets and petticoats just like the other common women.

Just like today, women in this era also had specific clothes to wear during different weather types. In order to shelter themselves from rain or sun, they used parasols and bonnets. Bonnets have always been fashionable up to date. Jewelry was also an important part of the dressing code.

Hair was usually donned with flowers. These women patted their hair in the middle and let their hair fall down in different styles. Pomades and oils were used to part it and keep it in place. They also used snoods and bun covers that were very stylish in the day.

The shoes worn in this period did not differ as much, those worn everyday could also be worn on formal occasions. This was mostly the case for the average woman. The wives and daughters of the rich on the other had had varied shoe types but also forced into the situation of the average women due to war.

The lace up boots was the most common shoe types in this period. They were considered fashionable and comfortable. They could also be worn together with many different dresses among other clothing types. Their use however declined especially during the war period, since people could not afford them because of the post war effects.

The woman of this period prior to the war had much difficulty in terms of dressing. Most of them could not get quality materials among other things. Despite this adversity however, they were graceful, trendy and fashionable in all aspects. The post civil war gowns cannot measure up to most of the designs of that period.
