Avoiding An Awkward Joke Explanation

By Dorothea Garner

Telling funny jokes to people is actually one of the best ways to gain rapport with someone. In fact, comedy has been beneficial to so many people that it even became a career. These days, there are so many stand up comedians who know how to make a big audience laugh out loud. The only problem would be when jokes backfire and have to be explained. Here are some ways on how to avoid joke explanation.

When this happens, one has to go through such an embarrassing situation. First, no one will laugh along with him, second, the people he is talking to will apologize for not getting the joke. This would create a very uncomfortable atmosphere among everyone. So if one would want to avoid this type of situation, he has to practice being funny. If he works on it, then it will become a second nature.

Whenever a comedian is on stage, he is always in motion. The reason behind this is because he wants people to have the energy and enthusiasm that he has. So if one were to make another person laugh, he also has to be energetic and enthusiastic so that his energy can be transferred to the person he is talking to.

When making a joke, one must have to make sure that people can relate to it. A lot of the best comedians use experiences from their daily lives as jokes. By doing this, they are telling a funny story that people can actually relate to and therefore be able to laugh about it. If a person tells lame jokes or puns, not only will people not get it, but they might get annoyed as well. So tell stories instead of stale quips.

Of course the delivery is equally as important as the content. If the story was not told properly, people would still not get it no matter how funny it really is. As the first rule above stated, always be full of energy and enthusiasm, especially when story telling. Never be monotonous as it will just put people to sleep. Also remember to keep the story short and straight to the point.

Before one can attempt to tell someone a joke, he should understand first about the person. People come from different environment and cultures. What may seem funny to one person may not be funny to others. That is why one should always be a good listener. Ask a lot of questions about the person and adjust the jokes according to that person so that he will be able to understand.

In the event, if the person does not get the joke, do not attempt to explain anymore. The best strategy would be to just change the topic and start asking questions again. At least by doing that, one will not show the person that he attempted to be funny. Make it seem like it was not meant to be funny and just keep the conversation flowing.

So if one would want to avoid another joke explanation, then these tips would help. Now if one would want to be funny, then he has to practice a lot. However, if a person does not laugh, do not take it personally as not everyone has a sense of humor.
