Some Tips On Turban Tying

By Claudine MacDonald

Having some pointers on turban tying can be useful for both the new and experienced alike. Sikhs typically wear them as they are tied in with their religion. It used to be that only males of high status would wear them, however, it is now a requirement in India that all adult males wear them. It is a symbol of their spirituality.

Creating your own turban is fairly simple. You must have a piece of fabric which is no less than three feet long and no less than one foot in width. The color is completely up to you. Since it does have spiritual significance, it is important to remember that various cultures and religions associate various meanings to colors. So always keep that in mind when choosing a color.

Before you begin wrapping, it's easier to roll the fabric first, and then unroll as you wrap. Once you have rolled it, hold one end of the fabric in place with one hand and begin to wrap it around your head diagonally. To achieve the proper style, it is important to continue to wrap diagonally as your proceed.

Before you begin though, leave about a half an inch or so in the back, this is vital to properly finishing wrapping at the end. As you wrap, keep flattening out the material and adjusting to keep it snug against your head. By flattening it out and adjusting as you go, you will keep any clumps of fabric from forming.

Keep wrapping until you have used almost all of your fabric. At around the one foot length you will want to fold it in half and tuck it underneath the other fabric near the top of your head. While wrapping, ensure you leave a bit of space at the top of your head, in the center, near the back.

This is where the piece of fabric at the back will come into play. Take the piece and pull it up. If you did any folding, now is the time to unfold just that one piece. Cover the last unwrapped area of your head with it and tuck it firmly underneath the material, keeping it in place. Flatten it out to remove any crinkles, it should be nice and smooth.

Always remember that while three feet of material will do, more is better. A typical turban is sold as cloth with the dimensions of sixteen feet in its length while being three feet in its width. These sheets require folding, bringing the width down from the three feet to at least four but not more than five inches in width. If creating your own from scratch, the closer you can get to these particular dimensions, the better the outcome of your turban.

Try turban tying several times to get the hang of it. Once you do it will be a lot easier and more fun. Wrapping diagonally and having that extra fabric draping down the back of your neck for the final part can make all the difference. Those are the biggest two keys to remember.
