Considerations For Beginning Guitarists When Buying Hollow Body Guitars

By Jason Wise

The electric hollow body guitar is similar to the traditional electric but is usually a bit bigger. It has a hollow sound-box and is fitted with pickups. The semi acoustic guitars are different instruments. They are traditional acoustic guitars that have been fitted with a microphone or electric pickups. There is a wide selection of hollow body guitars available, all of which have some differences in design and tone. It is worth doing some research if you are considering buying hollow body guitars.

These instruments are particularly popular with Jazz musicians who like the warm tonalities that these guitars produce. This makes the complication chord structures and arpeggios used in Jazz sound fantastic. These instruments have a similar sized neck to that of a traditional acoustic and are similar to play.

These instruments are perfect for practicing with as they do not require any amplification. They still sound loud with a nice clean tone when played without an amplifier, so if playing at volume is an issue they can still be used.

The hollow bodied guitar became widespread in the 1930s where they were adopted by many Jazz musicians. As the guitar's design became sleeker they became popular with the pop acts of the 60s, including The Beatles, The Who and The Kinks.

Early instruments produced a large amount of feedback. This made them unsuitable for bands that needed to fill a large space and play loud. But by the end of the 60s experimental bands from the psychedelic era began to play around with the feedback and produce strange effects.

These instruments were played by many famous musicians including, BB King, John McLauglin and John Lennon. The guitar is used in most genres of music these days because of their fantastic sound. These include, jazz, rock, blues, country and indie rock music. They also look fantastic and are an important part of many band's image.

The well known guitar makes produce these types of guitar. These include, Epiphone, Gibson, Gretsch, Fender and Hofner. Fender produce the Thinline hollow body guitar, which is very similar to their Telecaster and produce a great tone that is popular with country guitarist. The Gretsch models are possibly the most recognizable, they are quite large with a range of beautiful and classic designs.

The cheaper instruments can be great to learn on provided their "action" can be adjusted. This is usually done via a truss rod that runs through the neck. If you are undecided on whether to learn guitar on an acoustic or electric then these instruments offer the best of both worlds. A more expensive guitar could be a better investment in the long run than cheaper guitars, but you can always replace the pickups on a cheap guitar later. It is advisable to try a number of guitars out before you buy. Visit a music store near you that will let you play some instruments through various amplifiers. Do an online search for a hollow body guitar at music shops in your area and get some further advice and information.
