Genres Found In African Movies For Sale

By Charlotte McBride

With stars like Rita Dominic and Ramsey Noah, Africa's film sector is slowly gaining prominence in the international entertainment industry. Hits like South Africa's District 9 have changed how the world perceives the continent's movie industry, once associated with cheap, poor quality camcorder shot films. Nigeria has Africa's most prolific sector, and its movies are rapidly snapped up by audiences hungry for home grown content. African movies for sale can be bought at virtually any local market in the bustling continent, peddled by hawkers who sell them for a song.

Themes revolving around the occult, romance and action are very popular with audiences in Africa. However, unlike Hollywood studios, which have the cash to invest in spectacular stunts, big name actors, cutting edge animations and high tech post processing facilities, the land mass cinemas tend to rely more on great plots and superb acting to drive the point home, an approach that has kept audiences asking for more.

Fantasy films suffer from the same problem; there is simply no money to produce epics similar the Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter. Instead, the continent's movie makers tend to base their stories around something that most Africans can readily relate to; witchcraft. This enables them to create compelling story lines without using a lot of money. This approach has worked very well, and movies based on this theme tend to draw large audiences across the landmass.

Cupid travels to Africa too, and romance remains one of the most popular movie genres in the continent. Audiences cannot seem to get enough of this class of films. Producers focus on themes that most people around the continent can easily identify with; unrequited love, couples cheating on each other, the clash of traditional and modern values, greed, witchcraft among others. Romantic films remain one of the top grossing movie categories in Africa.

While the United States has Eddy Griffin, Britain has Mr. Bean, also known as Rowan Atkinson. Africa has its own share of funny people too, and they are a regular feature in a whole host of comedies that are released every year. African producers teach lessons by exaggerating actions while avoiding special effects. Instead, they focus on simple, easy to understand plots and well choreographed acting. Audiences around the landmass cannot seem to get enough of this class of films, which are surpassed only by romances in popularity.

There are very few adventure films produced by some from Africa studios. This is the result of limited budgets, as this class of cinemas requires a substantial amount of money to shoot and produce. However, this is slowly changing as studios grow.

Crime series of moving picture are another popular category of films. Also known as detective flicks, this genre has a huge following across the continent. This genre is characterized by hard core criminals, conspiracies, hardened detectives among other elements. Most people in Africa can easily identify with these themes, as they are a relatively common feature of day to day life.

Horror flicks remain very popular among most western audiences. Ghosts, vampires, grotesque creatures and serial killers are a common feature of these scary flicks. Audiences in Africa tend to prefer the supernatural; witchcraft, curses, demons and pastors tend to feature in many scary African movies for sale.
